  • Hamid El Kasri was born at Ksar El Kebir in the north of Morocco. From the age of seven he was taught by Maalems Alouane and Abdelouahed Stitou, but his passion came from his grandmother’s husband, a former Sudanese slave. His talent enabled him to join together Gnaoua rhythms from the north and south of Morocco (gharbaoui of Rabat, marsaoui of Essaouira, Soussi and Berber of the south). His reputation is attributable to his deep and intense voice making him one of the most appreciated and sought after maalems. A major performer at the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, he performed a concert in 2004 with the late Joe Zawinul, the famous Austrian pianist, which was one of the most remarkable fusions of the Festival. In 2009 he gave a memorable concert with the WDR Big Band and the famous Rai star, Khaled. At last year’s festival Hamid El Kasri presented « Yobadi », a fusion album recorded with Karim Ziad and other well-known musicians. He was accompanied on stage by Vincent Mascart on the saxophone, David Aubaile on synthesizer and flute, Scott Kinsey on keyboard, Nguyen Lê on guitar, Karim Ziad on drums and Daniel Zimmerman on trombone. The success of this album led to tours in Europe in 2010 and 2011. Hamid El Kasri performed at the Sufi Music Festival in Eskihir Turkey and at the Bevrijdingsfestival in Holland. In Paris he had a huge success with audiences at  the Zenith and the Palais des Congrès. In Morocco he has performed in Tangiers, Agadir, Fes....
