Maalem Brahim BELKANIZaouia Issaoua
Brahim El Belakani was born in Marrakech in 1945. Brahim began playing the hajouj, invoking Allah, certain saints, and Bambara spirits. He is one of the first to have exported his music to the West. His duo with Led Zeppelin will remain forever in memory. Maâlem Brahim Balkani has practiced fusion to his mystic art many times, with riffs from rock icons like Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, the piano chorus of New York jazzman Randy Weston, an old friend of Moroccan Gnaoua, the meditative pauses of Ravi Shankar, or the musical poetry of leading French song masters Jacques Higelin and Claude Nougaro.
