Maalem Hicham MERCHANEScène Moulay Hassan
The son of Maâlem Abdelkébir Merchane, Hicham Merchane was born in Marrakech in 1976. From the age of 7, he was raised in the Gnaoua art, an art that is passed down from father to son. Throughout his career he has played with many maâlems: Abdeslam Alikkane in France and Belgium, Mahmoud Gania in Morocco and abroad, and Hamid El Kasri. He also had the opportunity to play in Brazil and France with Hassan Hakmoun, a US-based maâlem. Hicham Merchane walks in the footsteps of his father, with whom he often shared the stage. He learned to sing, dance, and play all the Gnaoua instruments with the great maâlem Baqbou. Between 2003 and 2004, he participated in three Gnaoui celebrations in Chicago, Texas, and New York, where he took up fusion with a jazz group.
