With each musical event fast approaching, Essaouira is preparing the venues, its walls, and its magic to welcome music as it should be.
During the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, the entire city abounds with the strains of Africa and the world in every narrow street and across the ramparts.
From the main stage to the beach and across the intimate places of the medina, to each one his/her festival!
Moulay Hassan Stage :
The meeting of Gnaoua with the world
The stage overlooking the city is located between the beach and the medina in order to hold the maximum number of people. No need for a map to find the Moulay Hassan stage. All one has to do is follow the crowd, stretch one’s ears and listen to the outbursts of music. Every year it is the place where the stars meet offering fusions and residencies. Since 1998, it has seen the stage of countless Gnaoua, jazz and world music performances.
Beach Stage :
Discovery of music coming from elsewhere
The venue of regular concert goers, the beach stage offers an eclectic and diverse program. It is generally the home of bands or headliners presenting solo concerts just to get free of the Gnaoua spell to listen to Funk, Soul, Hip Hop or Reggae music.
Borj Bab Marrakech :
Under the stars
A historic monument and prime venue for exhibitions and artistic events, the walls of Borj Bab Marrakech serve as home to residences and fusion concerts. The place will also house the Hassan Hajjaj exhibit.
Zaouia Issaoua :
Traditions and memory
Because the sacred codes of traditional music must not be forgotten, Zaouia Issaoua is there to serve as recollection.A religious structure and burial place of the founding saints, this venue represents meditation and spirituality. “Lilas” are held there until dawn where the trance is the center piece of the« Hadra ».
Zaouia Sidna Blal :
A resolutely spiritual venue for one night, the Essaouira maalems pay tribute to Mahmoud Guinea in the humble dwelling of Sidna Blal.
